New Ideas and Technology Bioluminescence has Helped to Create
Bioluminescence is a form of chemi-luminescence. It is light produced by a chemical reaction and it is also a cold light which produces very little thermal energy. For this reason, bioluminescence is ideal as a light source. Engineered bioluminescence could perhaps one day be used to reduce the need for street lighting, or for decorative purposes if it becomes possible to produce light that is both bright enough and can be sustained for long periods at a workable price. If this technology were to be used as lighting for example on a highway, it would reduce the need of electrical streetlights and light would be created using clean, replenishable fuel. Research is also currently being done on a light bulb that is powered by bioluminescent bacteria.
